Appreciated by Gabrielle d’Estrée, mistress of Henry IV, Mercurey owes its name to Mercury, the god of commerce in Roman mythology.

Description
The Côte Chalonnaise, in Saône-et-Loire, extends the Côte d’Or south of the Côte de Beaune to the north of the Mâconnais mountains. Mercurey is one of Burgundy’s most important wine appellations in terms of vineyard area. The Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) was established in 1923. The vines are located between 230 and 320 metres above sea level and cover more than 400 hectares. The wines of Mercurey were appreciated by Gabrielle d’Estrée, mistress of Henri IV. The appellation owes its name to Mercury, the god of commerce and messenger of the gods in Roman mythology.
